Derek has a Master’s Degree in Environment and Development from the University of Natal after completing his BSc Hons in Marine Biology at the University of Cape Town. Derek has more than fifteen years of experience working in the environmental and sustainability consulting sector. Derek specialises in climate change and sustainable energy strategic research for the private and public sector.
Derek previously headed up the eThekwini Municipal Energy Office in the city of Durban. The Energy Office is broadly responsible for climate change mitigation in the city and covers areas such as renewable energy, energy efficiency and low-carbon-development. While at the Energy Office, Derek was responsible for developing and managing a number of Climate Change Programs. These include the Durban Climate Change Strategy development, the Shisa Solar campaign, KZN Sustainable Energy Forum, Municipal Energy Efficiency Demand Side Management Program and Schools Energy Efficiency campaigns. Derek was at the Municipality for over four years and was previously a consultant for eight years working for local government in KwaZulu-Natal. During this time Derek managed various programs and projects focusing on sustainable local economic development.
Derek’s primary field of interest is the interface between the economy and the environment, with increasing emphasis on promoting climate-friendly consumption patterns. Derek also sees strong potential in Information and Communications Technology to transition our way of life to a more sustainable future.
Derek has two young daughters that keep him busy most of the time outside work. Derek is also a keen cyclist and part-time computer geek.
