Urban Earth was contracted by Sustainable Energy Africa to undertake a scoping study exploring approaches to digitising municipal electricity asset registers and the potential role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in this process. The study responds to the need for enhanced visibility and planning of South Africa’s ageing municipal electricity infrastructure, where refurbishment requirements have often been underestimated or poorly costed. The study provided an overview of the policy context as well as the current status of electricity asset management. It then considered possible commercial and open source approaches to electricity asset management. It also examined how AI could be utilised to digitise electricity asset management information.
